THE WINE OF THE WEEK
Domaine Faiveley Echezeaux Grand Cru 2007
“Burgundy wine is masculine and Bordeaux is feminine?”
“Or the other way around?”
Often do you hear say that Burgundy wine appeals to the senses, while Bordeaux’s remember the beauty, in other words, Burgundy is male, masculine and Bordeaux is delicate, feminine…, but is it so?
Earlier, Bordeaux wine had body half, usually with 12.5 ° of alcohol, while the Burgundy were 13th and, perhaps, stronger. Currently, the Burgundy´s still have 13 ° and the Bordeaux 14 ° and 13 °. The color is essential, Bordeaux, dark and intense and the Burgundy, less color and lighter. So… who is masculine and who is feminine?. There is undoubtedly Burgundy wines of great force, especially those of the Côte de Nuits, but in general, the Burgundy are of little color and less intensity of flavor, they are lightweight and scented, fine and delicate compared to the Bordeaux, of great color, great aroma and intense flavor. Bordeaux and Burgundy will compete for the first place among the French wines. I believe that both the ones and the others show us that viticulture has been achieved through the centuries.
For you, what are your favourites, the Bordeaux or the Burgundy?
The weekend I had a tasting of wines from Burgundy, with a group of discerning tasters. We tasted 4 wines, two communal, a Premier Cru and Grand Cru:
Aegerter Meursault 2012
Straw yellow colour, fresh with complex aromas of citrus and fruit: pear, Apple and melon. Flavors of dried fruit and vanilla.
Aegerter Nuits-Saint-Georges 2012
Bright red with complex aromas of red fruits: blackcurrant and blueberry, enhanced with aromas of oak. Elegant on the palate with fine tannins and a silky texture.
Domaine Guyon Pernand Vergelesses
1st. Cru “Les Vergelesses“ 2006
Ruby red color, with aromas of cherry and weed. The mouth is Ethereal with notes of black currant in the end.
Domaine Faiveley Echezeaux Grand Cru 2007
A beautiful clear dark Ruby red colour. The nose is complex and very pleasant with plenty of fruity aromas. It is a round wine on the palate. Mixed and silky tannins give long–lasting scents in the finish.
This last wine was met at its best, with its nine years of age, which allowed it to show the potential that achieve the best wines of the Côte d’Or. A true delight of wine, by which qualify as the best wine week.
Where does this wine come from?
The commune of Flagey Echezeaux, located in the Côte de Nuits, the most famous area of red wines in Burgundy. In this commune there are two Grands Cru: the Echézeaux and Grand Echézeaux. The commune is neighbor of Vosne-Romanée, birthplace of the mythical Romanée Conti.
The vineyard Echezeaux has greater diversity of soils: magas, red alluvium, gravel, its soil is deep and located 300 m above the sea level. It has an area of 38 ht., with an annual production of 1,200 hl. wine.
Of all the owners of the vineyard, Joseph Faiveley owns only 0.87 of has. so the quantity of wine that generates is very small.
The grape? The Pinot Noir is the only variety of all the best wines of Burgundy. You are not allowed any other strain.
